It's amazing how much a picture can change with just a small amount of tweaking in Photoshop's Exposure filter, take this picture I took:

Now look at it with the Exposure values added:

Even though the background loses some detail and becomes slightly 'posturised' the whole picture is brighter with more 'depth' and increased emphasis on foreground objects. So sometimes it's worth fiddling with the exposure control to see if you can get more out of your pictures.
